The distinguishing factor between biodegradable and compostable straws is that, while biodegradable material breaks down when exposed to bacteria, compostable items break down when exposed to natural environmental conditions.

What is a biodegradable straw?

Biodegradable products can refer to any material that breaks down and degrades in the natural environment. Because biodegradable plastics are made from and with chemicals, some of them may leave behind micro toxic waste residue. While they provide an alternative to plastic straws, biodegradable straws can leave toxins behind when they break down.

What is a compostable straw?

Compostable products are made exclusively from organic substances that decay in the environment. The only residual byproducts left behind by the decomposition of organic matter are fertilizers and other things that enhance the soil’s health.

Technically Biodegradable vs. Home Compostable

Some extremely well-liked “compostable” straws can be labeled biodegradable since they have the potential to decompose under very specific circumstances. The issue is that such factors call for conditions that can only be met in certain commercial composting facilities, of which there are only approximately 100 in the U.S. The environment must be without oxygen and have a temperature over 140 degrees Fahrenheit. These straws will endure forever without commercial composting, just like plastic; they won’t break down in natural environmental conditions like home compost.

Our biodegradable straws only need dirt and water to decompose. They return to the ground under these generally obtainable conditions. Moreover, they don’t bring any dangerous chemicals with them.
